Getting thru to cellphones that don't ring thru

I don't know if this is just a local rural problem, or if others have experienced this. Most of my customers now leave cellphone numbers instead of landlines. A problem i have come across is that sometimes when i call back , i dial the number and nothing happens on connection, no sound nothing. What ive been doing lately and it works well in these cases is first call the number and while im still on the line listening to nothingness i simultaneously call the same number using another phone(my cell) with that phone im able to trick the system into thinking that the phone is busy and it will default to voice-mail. now that I've reached voice-mail with the second phone. I inform the customer of the problem generally speaking they eighter know of the problem or are grateful that i went the extra mile. Eighter way i get the job that mighta gotta way.
